Three Decades of Akira Slide Homages

Madman's Knowledge

Really enjoyed playing through Bloodborne this last week but when I finished, I got a real hunger for more cosmic horror themed stories and so picked up a collection of H.P Lovecraft's short fiction. We also finally got around to watching Possession (1981) which we've both had on the top of our watchlist for a while and we both really loved it. Planning on watching Sam Neil's In the Mouth of Madness (1994) and Event Horizon (1997) too, which are films I think might also scratch the cosmic horror itch. I also came across this video on Zdzisław Beksiński which I found really informative while also showcasing a lot of the artists different kind of works. He's an artist I've admired for a long time though mostly from afar, so it was cool to get a better understanding of his influences and inspirations as well as seeing new pieces I've never seen before from different eras of his life.

Krazy Kat

'In 1910, a mouse named Ignatz first beaned Krazy Kat with a brick. The plot of this comic strip, centered on a “heppy go lucky kat,” is simple. Krazy Kat loves Ignatz Mouse. Officer Pup loves Krazy Kat. Ignatz Mouse hits Krazy over the head with a brick; Officer Pup pursues and usually arrests Ignatz Mouse; Krazy, to whom the brick seems to be a sign of love, is ecstatic. A small heart pops up above his head'

This article introduced me to the Krazy Kat animated shorts and comic strip by George Herriman; not quite as surreal as Fleischer but just as strange, and really funny. Here's an episode from the Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/silent-krazy-kat-and-ignatz-mouse-at-the-circus.

The Ring of Nibelung

Read after playing through Elden Ring, reading Berserk and watching several fantasy films. Really enjoyed this comic, especially the artwork and I got a genuine sense of the operatic scale throughout. Planning on picking up one of P. Craig Russell's Elric books next and getting back into the The Lord of the Rings series.

Bullertproof Coffin & Madman

Bulletproof Coffin is another Kane and Hine book that I really loved. After this and Kane and Able, I'm now determined to seek out all their work. Madman, another surreal and creative comic with a classic superhero guise was also great and I've already started the second volume.

The Eternaut

Like no other comic I've read; was consistently creative and genuine and had a eerie sense of realism I didn't expect.

Tekkonkinkreet & Monkey Meat

Two cool and kinetic comic series that I've really enjoyed lately. Juni Ba is one of my favourite contemporary comic creators and I thought their TMNT 2022 Annual was just great. Still reading through the second volume of Tekkonkinkreet but I'm already loving the world and all the characters, especially Black and White.

Peter Chung's 'Keys to the Kingdom' Three-Part Episode For the 2007 Miniseries Re/ Visioned: Tomb Raider
The Maxx

Watched the animated miniseries from '95. Was consistently interesting and unexpected. Going to start the comic soon.

James Webb Telescope and Einstein Ring

Like everyone else I've been completely enamoured and in awe by the photographs taken by the James Webb telescope and while looking around and reading up on space photography I came across the Einstein Ring phenomena. Its explained really when in the video below and looks like magic.

50,000 Thousand Fans Can't Be Wrong

Spent the last week tracking down some new Elvis albums to listen to and found several really great ones that were mostly new to me. Some highlights have been Elvis (1956) which includes the single 'I Was the One' that's become a recent favourite, Elvis Is Back (1960) with a cool cover of Little Willie John's Fever, His Hand In Mine (1960), the first of his gospel albums, and Something For Everybody! (1961) which includes another recent favourite 'Put the Blame On Me'.

Other albums I've had on repeat this last week include Daniel Johnston's Hi, How Are You? (1983) and Retired Boxer (1984), Nick Cave and Warren Ellis' Seven Psalms (2022), Oozing Wound's High Anxiety (2019), and Gnod's Easy to Build, Hard to Destroy (2021)

Playlist:

A pair of live sets that I've come across recently. the first is Nirvana at Rhino Records, LA in 1989 and the second is Son House in 1969.
